The 'Quest' III

Intermezzo V - The Return

Intermezzo

He crept through the shadows, albeit slightly clumsily. His target was within sight. Around him, nature slept apart from a few creatures out hunting. Quietly, the wagon train rattled along its path. His feet navigated the large roots protruding from the ground as he neared. With one swift, silent action, he leapt upon the ‘train, landing just behind Shandor’s ex-cabin. Before he moved, he swore he could hear the group’s leader talking in the cabin behind, although he couldn’t make out what the conversation was about, or with whom. He slid over to the door and pressed the handle, it was locked. He sighed and muttered a profanity. He crept around to the window, and after a few minutes managed to get it open. With a bit of luck, he managed to quietly enter the room without disturbing anything, including the row of plants which were glowing softly. After a moment or two of searching around, he attained a bag. Immediately, he took the boxes of ingredients from Shandor’s chest of drawers and deposited them into the bag. Hurriedly, unsure if the drivers will check the cabins, or if any one of the group suffers from insomnia, he opened the chest containing weapons and other equipment. After sifting through them, and making more noise than he would have hoped for, he got everything he should need. He chose to leave the contents he didn’t need just strewn across the floor. Finally, he collects as much clothing as the bag can carry. Carefully, he put the bag out through the open window and onto the walkway. He shortly follows. After a quick glance in either direction, he attempted to reset the window in its original position. However, this action was rather clumsily done and the window pane slips inwards, smashing over the chest of drawers beneath the window. He hauled the bag over his shoulder and dived off the ‘train, rolling into the safety of the darkness of the forest before anyone can do anything. He looks back at it and sees the silhouette of someone moving towards the cabin. He pats the bag to make sure it was still with him, confirming that it was, he hoped that everything was still okay.

Shandor got to his feet and took off deeper into the forest.
