Tildruin FAQ

Money

1) Could you tell us about the money system in Tildruin?

Shailejron answers:

As usual, we will not unveil the full capacity of this system. We have
a strong belief and emphasis on mysticism, esoteric knowledge and
discovery within the game.

The common monetary system
---------------------------------
The basic common monetary system will be based upon: copper,
silver, gold, platinum. One silver is worth 10 copper, one gold is
worth 10 silver and so forth. All NPC shopkeepers can state their
prices using common coins and they will always accept them.

Alternative monetary systems
------------------------------
Alternative monetary units will be used to add atmosphere and
flavour to an area, race and culture. Creating new coin types will be
an option during the area building process. An underwater race
could use "blue coral coins" and a gnome treasury could contain
"ruby coins".

From the Player's perspective
------------------------------
By now you are thinking that this is way to complex for any
player to handle, but keep reading. The player stores her coins in
money containers (purses and money pouches) or piles in the
inventory. A transaction (such as buying or selling) will automatically
add/subtract coins from a money container as it sees fit.

The player simply collects coins in money containers without
worrying about coin types. The total sum of a money container is
always displayed in common coins whenever the cursor is hovering
above it.

Example: A purse containing 2 ruby coins, 10 coral coins and 2
gold could be read as: X1 platinum coins, X2 gold coins etc.

Crafting coins
--------------
Thieves will be able to attempt to counterfeit coins if they have the
necessary skills and materials. It will not be a trivial task and poor
craftsmanship will result in fakes coins that nobody would accept.

2) Will there be multiple currencies? E.g. For each race?

Shailejron answers:

Money can be stacked in the character's inventory and containers. Storing money in pouches will ease transactions, because the money is transferred directly to and from the character's pouch. Using a pouch will also be advisable because you can store different coin types in the same pouch and the appropriate coin type will automatically be used.
Some cities will use local coin types and others will refuse them.

3) Will there be interest/transfer fees in banks in Tildruin?

Shailejron answers:

There will be fees for exchanging and depositing money at a bank. The
in-game banks will not be giving you any interest. If you as a player
deem this harsh then I would like to challenge you start your own bank. :)

4) If it is 2*ruby_weight+10*coral_weight+2*gold_weight then displaying its content as gold/silver could confuse the player (or there will be the way to see the actual content of a purse?).

Shailejron answers:

You can see the actual contents of the purse and examine each coin type separately.
Sorry if this was made unclear. The purse is a container, containing piles of coins.

5) If it's X1*platinum_weight+X2*gold_weight+... then it can lead to mismatches like this: we have some coins equal to 9 silver, we add some 1 silver worth -> we have 1 gold 0 silver (and the purse becomes lighter).

Shailejron answers:

That's correct, but don't confuse the economy with a medieval system. The value of a
coin is not based on it's weight. All coins have the _same_ sizes.

If you have 9 silver coins in your purse and add 1 more you'll end up with 10
silver coins. The total value of the purse is 1 gold, but you still have 10 silver
coins.

6) What about automatic subtraction when buying stuff? The players would like to get rid of the heavier currency first.

Shailejron answers:

As all coins have the same size, you'd rather get rid of 10 silver than 1 gold
even though 1 gold weighs slightly more than 1 silver.

7) Will it be possible to steer the coin selection procedure if you can pay with multiple sort of coins ?
7a) If you have one rare coin some common coins and a coin which weights very much and you can pay with all three of them ... which is chosen ?

Shailejron answers:

The coin selection procedure will always look for a money container
at the top of level of your inventory. If it doesn't find one there it will stop
looking. This way you can use multiple money containers to keep your coins
separated.

You might use one container for common coins and another for extremely rare. Just
make sure the purse you want to use is residing at the top level of your inventory.
Containers can contain containers, so just stash away purses that you don't want to use.

We believe this is a fairly smooth way to handle coinage and would apply
to the scenarios you describe. Don't hesitate to inquire further as I sometimes
tend to be too hasty or unclear.

8) Do the coins have a collector's value so that collecting rare types of coins and selling them could be a way for earning money... ?

Shailejron answers:

I guess it could be handled by the player community. Say I own a one-of-a-kind
dragonbone coin, would you be willing to pay more than it's worth? If enough
players are interested in the coin collecting business then you have a market for
trades and sales.

You will be able to found and run Associations in Tildruin. Perhaps there is room for
a coin oriented Association?

9) Will the weight limitations affect maximum amount of coins the player can carry? If it will, how much different types of coins will weight (will gold coins be 10 times heavier than silver ones etc.) ?

Shailejron answers:

Yes, weight limitations will affect the maximum the amount of coins a player
can carry. Every material in Tildruin has its unique properties, amongst weight,
weaknesses, rarity and value. Each coin type will inherit appropriate material
properties. In practice gold is heavier than silver, but not ten times heavier.
Platinum is heavier and stronger than gold. etc.
